Finally the long school year is out and its time to hit the lake, beach or your favorite camping site. The weather is warming up and it is shaping up for what looks to be an amazing summer. Jim Joyce is Voted Best Umpire in MLB?

As many baseball fans know, Jim Joyce may have made one of the worst calls in all of baseball a few weeks ago. Detroit Tigers pitcher, Armando Galarraga, was in the 9th inning with two outs and was perfect. So far he had thrown a perfect game, a feat that had only been accomplished by 18 other pitchers in the modern era dating back to the early 20th century. Two other perfect games have already been recorded this year which is a rarity considering it is often three, four or five years between perfect games.

So as Galarraga approached history, only one out away from achieving something that very few have ever done in the past, he delivered the pitch. The batter, Donald, hit a ground ball to the first baseman, Cabrera, who fielded it and threw it to Galarraga who was covering first. The throw clearly beat the runner and for a short second the world thought they saw the 19th perfect game of the 20th century. Unbelievable Joyce, the umpire, called the runner safe, ruining Galarraga’s perfect game and shot at history.

A week later, Joyce is voted as the best umpire in all of the majors. It seems very ironic that an umpire who made one of the biggest mistakes this year could be named the best umpire in the game. In a secret ballot by the players, Joyce was the unanimous winner. “The sad thing about the Galarraga game is, Jim Joyce is seriously one of the best umpires around,” one player told ESPN in its full report. “He always calls it fair, so players love him. Everyone makes mistakes, and it’s terrible that this happened to him.”

Celebrate the 100th Father’s Day!

With Father’s Day under a week away, its time to get the special man in your life that perfect present. This upcoming Sunday is Father’s Day and many have yet to find that “just right” present for dad.

Why do we even celebrate Father’s Day?

Father’s Day started back in 1909 in Spokane, Washington when a little girl buy the name of Sonora Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon. This idea that children should celebrate their fathers came to her because of how special her father was to her. After Sonora’s mother passed, her father, William, raised her all by himself. She wanted him to know how courageous, selfless and loving of a man he was.

Since his birthday was in June, she decided to have the first ever Father’s day on June 19th, 1910. That’s right, this year is the 100th year celebration of the first ever Father’s Day.

Sixteen years later, the National Father’s day Commitee was formed in New York and it wasn’t until President Nixon in 1972, that Father’s Day became a national holiday, celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year.
